Denis Villeneuve, after the worldwide success of the second chapter of Dune, may have already found his next project, or rather, two! According to Variety, the production company Legendary Pictures has officially confirmed the making of Dune 3, the third chapter of the sci-fi saga directed by the visionary Canadian director. The film is expected to continue the story of Paul Atreides’ rise to galactic power.
Legendary has also acquired the film rights to Jacobsen’s book “Nuclear War: A Scenario,” a Pulitzer Prize-finalist essay that analyzes possible nuclear war scenarios based on interviews with military and civilian experts. We talked about it in the conditional tense as Villeneuve is currently in talks to produce, adapt and/or direct the film, with the participation of his production partner Tanya Lapointe.
Still no official information on the production schedule of Dune 3, but for Legendary Pictures it seems to have priority over the second project in the pipeline. In short, Denis Villeneuve is preparing for two years of intense work that will keep us in suspense, between the wonders of Arrakis and the apocalyptic scenarios of an atomic war.
As Villeneuve prepares for a new challenge, the second installment of Dune continues to dominate the worldwide box office with a gross of over $630 million. The film, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and an all-star cast, currently represents the highest-grossing film of 2024.
