Samsung is looking beyond UFS 4.0 memory in view of the next-generation top-of-the-line smartphones. The technology renewal cycle for Universal Flash Storage has a duration of about four years – UFS 3.0 was announced in 2018, UFS 4.0 in 2022 – but there is room for an intermediate update as it was for UFS 3.1 which debuted in 2020. The same will happen soon for UFS 4.0.
It is Samsung Semiconductor itself that unveils the plans for the future by showing the roadmap for the release of memories between now and 2027.
As expected, before UFS 5.0 comes out in 2027 there will be room for UFS 4.0 4-lane, a solution capable of increasing speeds from about 4 to 8GB/s. Even better will be the technology coming in a few years (UFS 5.0), which will take the speed beyond the limit of 10GB/s.
So let’s review the release timing of the next memories that we will find on top-of-the-range smartphones in the years to come (not only that, the news will also closely concern wearables and automotive):
-UFS 4.0 4-lane: mass production at the end of 2024, availability from 2025
